Case Studies

The B-hive Case Study Library examines real-world usage of B-hive solutions. The Case studies represent a cross-section of companies and problems solved by B-hive. Full case studies can be retrieved here.

Large Web Company Increases Capacity 500%

With increasing user demand coupled with more constrained resources, data centers - especially in Web companies - are reaching their limits. Traditionally, the only way to deal with more demand was to add more capacity; but simply adding extra capacity is no longer a viable option for various reasons - excessive costs, real estate needs, constrained manpower and more.

One of the world's largest web companies selected B-hive Conductor™ to drive an automated virtualized data center. The result was an increase in their user-facing capacity by 500% while keeping operations costs the same (in both manpower and capital expense). Read the whole Case Study.

Financial Services Leader Insures the Bank is Always Open

Even with advancing technology, many data centers are faced with unique problems that can't be solved with traditional management tools. From distributed SOA applications to virtualized infrastructures, the technology being used in today's data centers has significant visibility and communication gaps that can create organizational havoc - especially when problems occur.

A leading financial services firm picked B-hive Conductor™ to monitor application performance, isolate bottlenecks and take appropriate actions - automatically - to solve issues before end users even knew there were problems. Conductor's unprecedented end-to-end visibility, performance breakdown by infrastructure tier and comprehensive Service Level Control helps keep banking services open 24x7 - without increasing all the banks served by the firm so that the bank can always be open, without adding costs (in either personnel or equipment) to the data center. White Papers

B-hive White Papers examine problems and solutions in virtualized and/or distributed data center environments. A sampling of B-hive White papers follows:

Achieving Service Level Control

"Better! Faster! Stronger!"

The iconic seventies television catch phrase could easily be the new motto for data centers. It seems that no matter how fast, robust, or responsive IT services become, management (especially the "business" management) always wants more.

Innovative concepts such as Service Oriented Architecture and Virtualization can help - "can" being the operative word. After all, technology alone does not improve reliability, increase application speed or solve problems. Rather, it is how that technology is implemented and managed that allows users to reap the benefits. In the cases of virtualization and SOA, that means using specialized management tools built specifically for these new technologies.

This paper discusses how customers can use virtualization technology and service oriented architecture, coupled with the appropriate management strategies and tools, to achieve Service Level Control. Service Level Control is a combination of conventional Service Level Management (Reporting, Threshold Checking, and Alerts) and the added ability to automate corrective actions when problems occur. Achieving Service Level Control helps IT organizations reach the promised land of such initiatives as Green IT and Darkroom Operations. Read the whole Whitepaper.

Service Oriented Infrastructure: Delivering the SOA Data Center

Application architecture is steadily evolving toward composite and distributed models such as SOA and Web 2.0. As traditional applications are broken down into smaller modules that can be combined into new services and subscribed to on the fly, there is an exponential increase in both complexity and interdependency. This is compounded by unpredictable changes in the usage of each module - from end users and dynamic applications - often resulting in dramatic, viral propagation patterns.

All of these changes are taxing data centers to the limits: both the physical infrastructure and the operations model. Given the complex application landscape, it is often impossible to correlate available system-level information - such as CPU and memory usage - with the user experience. Once the desired service levels are achieved through a manual, highly-skilled tuning process, the dynamic nature of the application quickly upsets the delicate balance. This happens on a daily basis, resulting in an expensive, 24/7 hands-on operations process and expensive infrastructure buffers. Ultimately, this approach does not scale and can lead to a situation where the cost per transaction exceeds revenue. Data centers need a better way to align operations with business objectives.
